Difference between CCTV and IP Camera

Technological developments are increasingly advanced in this era, we can see a lot of technology that can be used as a security tool, for example, such as cameras. Surveillance cameras are one of the most widely used security tools, both in public places and at home. As we know there are 2 types of cameras that are popular today, namely CCTV and IP Camera.

But, do we know what is the difference between CCTV and IP Camera?

The function of CCTV and IP Camera is actually the same, namely recording video that is channeled to a device and then displayed on a monitor. What makes the difference lies in the way it works and the features each camera has.

CCTV

Closed-Circuit Television or commonly abbreviated as CCTV relies on analog signals. Analog signals are used to transmit video from one or more cameras to a receiving device (receiver). Analog cameras record images, then send these images via coaxial cable to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The DVR then converts the video from an analog signal to a digital signal, compresses the data, and stores it on the hard drive. The monitor, which is used to display the recorded results, must be connected to the DVR. The DVR can also connect to routers and modems to display video over the internet on an internal network.

IP Cameras

Unlike analog CCTV, IP cameras rely on an internet connection to send captured images. The name itself stands for "Internet Protocol camera". IP cameras do not require a DVR like CCTV. Instead, an IP camera requires a device called a switch that is connected to a network video recording (NVR). In the NVR there is a software program that records video, converts it into digital format, then saves it to a storage device, such as a hard disk.
